The spring semester is coming to an end, as is the City College’s spring sports season.

For some the season is over. But others are gearing up to make a run for the state title.

The softball team, which has earned 18 out of the last 20 Big 8 Conference titles, is ready for the postseason after getting the No. 2 seat. They have an overall record of 37-4 and a Big 8 conference record of 18-3.

“Other than getting beat by Sierra [College] we’ve had the kind of year we want,” softball head coach Robert Maglione says. “We’re ready to go into the playoffs and I think we have a good shot to do what we’re supposed to do and get a chance to play for the state title.”

The baseball team has a record of 21-15 overall and the best Big 8 conferance record of 15-6. It’s also ready to go into the postseason.

“They’re excited and are hoping to accomplish big things,” baseball head coach Andy McKay says about the players.

Men’s Track & Field

Men’s track and field head coach Rob Dewar and the entire coaching staff is helping the squad prepare for the Nor-Cal Trials.

“The season’s been very successful so far,” Dewar says. “We were successful at all the guys qualifying for the Big 8 Conference and Nor-Cal Trials. The most successful part is our relay teams. We have a javelin thrower, Cody Allen, who’s No. 1 in the nation  [among community colleges].”

The four-by-one relay team is No. 1 in the state and No. 2 in the nation among community colleges Dewar adds.

Women’s Track & Field

The women’s track and field team is also preparing for the last stretch of the season and first-year head coach Marisa Avendano says that it was a good season.

“We’re in our championship season right now,” Avendano says. “Out of four finals [in the conference trials] we won three. It’s looking really good right now.”

The swim team’s season is over but head coach Steve Hanson says it had its highs throughout the season.

“The best part of the season for me was getting to know these swimmers as well as we did,” Hanson says. “Having them feel successful at the end of the season like they met their goals and they did. They all got better. It set the tone for years to come.”

The women’s tennis team finished with a 1-10 record and the men’s team lost all nine games but head coach Dave Griffin thought his team did its best and four players will be going to the Nor-Cal Tournament.

“I think they competed extremely well,” he says. “We had a lot of freshman players. I expect that from quite a few of them to be back and improve quite well next year.”

Dean of Athletics Mitch Campbell says that the Athletics Department as a whole has performed well throughout the academic year.

“I feel good on how we’ve performed as a whole,” Campbell says. “Our student athletes are doing a good job in the classroom. In terms of on the athletic field we’ve had a lot of success, starting with the fall. Golf (won the) state championship; football, volleyball and cross country won a conference title.”

Campbell is also proud of the sports from this semester.

“This spring, both baseball and softball are doing very well. Both track teams are going strong into the postseason.”

The sports teams played well throughout the academic year. With a new year starting in the fall, the sports teams could be in for another successful year.
