    Small is a freelance journalist that currently writes about the NBA’s Sacramento Kings for Sacramento and

    He's held internships at various news outlets in Sacramento and wrote for the Kings’ Tyreke Evans for Rookie of the Year (RekeROY) campaign through Sacramento Press.

    He graduated from Sacramento City College with an Associate of Arts Journalism Publication Specialist degree.

    He earned a JACC Sports Game Story Honorable Mention writing for the school's student-run online publication at also wrote for it's print publication The Express.

    Small plans to transfer to Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, CA in the fall.

College Career

In 2007 I received my first internship with KTXL FOX40.  During that time I performed beatchecks, calling police and sheriff stations within a 200-mile radius.  I also checked newswires for stories, organized news and court files and checked court cases online.

I went out on two assignments with a photographer covering the press conferences of 2008 Republican Presidential Candidate Fred Thompson and the Hannah-Rose death case.

In-between internships I talked to many reporters and anchors out in the field covering stories.  I received advice from them about the media industry and studied them while they completed their reports.

In 2009 I received my second internship with The Jim Kozimor Show on Sports 1140 KHTK.  I screened phone calls from listeners, ran errands for the host, producer and guests and recorded personal information for contest participants into the database.

I joined, Sacramento City College’s student-run online newspaper, in the Fall of 2009. The publication won the 2009 Online Journalism General Excellence award in the state of California at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges.

I joined the print version, the Express, in the Spring of 2010.  So far I have covered eight stories and contributed to four stories that can be found under the and Express Print tabs at the top of the page.

In Sept. 2009 I attended the Sacramento Kings Media Day interviewing many of the players, head coach Paul Westphal and Kings President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie.  I also interviewed Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson regarding the Kings’ Operation Sellout campaign.  The interviews led to a story about Operation Sellout, published in the Sacramento Press.

In Nov. 2009 I attended two of the Kings’ practices and a game vs. the Miami Heat in Dec. 2009 to work on a personality profile on Kings rookie guard Tyreke Evans.  The profile earned me a position as SacPress’ writer for the Tyreke Evans Rookie of the Year (RekeROY) campaign, lasting from late-December to late-April. In 2010 I was chosen by KCRA TV Channel 3 to become a Sports Assistant for the Sports Director Del Rodgers.  I attended a news meeting and successfully pitched a story that was reported by news anchor/reporter Walt Gray.  On March 20, I co-produced the sports segment.  I also write scripts for Rodgers and other anchors, research information for stories, travel with photographers for stories, record and edit video for live newscasts, and controlled the KCRA 3 Digital Center for an on-air slide show.

I completed a second internship with KCRA and still contribute with the station.  This September, I will transfer to Azusa Pacific University to continue my studies in journalism and will write for the student publication The Clause.
