College Career

In 2007 I received my first internship with KTXL FOX40.  During that time I performed beatchecks, calling police and sheriff stations within a 200-mile radius.  I also checked newswires for stories, organized news and court files and checked court cases online.

I went out on two assignments with a photographer covering the press conferences of 2008 Republican Presidential Candidate Fred Thompson and the Hannah-Rose death case.

In-between internships I talked to many reporters and anchors out in the field covering stories.  I received advice from them about the media industry and studied them while they completed their reports.

In 2009 I received my second internship with The Jim Kozimor Show on Sports 1140 KHTK.  I screened phone calls from listeners, ran errands for the host, producer and guests and recorded personal information for contest participants into the database.

I joined, Sacramento City College’s student-run online newspaper, in the Fall of 2009. The publication won the 2009 Online Journalism General Excellence award in the state of California at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges.

I joined the print version, the Express, in the Spring of 2010.  So far I have covered eight stories and contributed to four stories that can be found under the and Express Print tabs at the top of the page.

In Sept. 2009 I attended the Sacramento Kings Media Day interviewing many of the players, head coach Paul Westphal and Kings President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie.  I also interviewed Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson regarding the Kings’ Operation Sellout campaign.  The interviews led to a story about Operation Sellout, published in the Sacramento Press.

In Nov. 2009 I attended two of the Kings’ practices and a game vs. the Miami Heat in Dec. 2009 to work on a personality profile on Kings rookie guard Tyreke Evans.  The profile earned me a position as SacPress’ writer for the Tyreke Evans Rookie of the Year (RekeROY) campaign, lasting from late-December to late-April. During the campaign I contributed to a podcast for The Voice of the Nation on The Lakers Nation,

In 2010 I was chosen by KCRA TV Channel 3 to become a Sports Assistant for the Sports Director Del Rodgers.  I attended a news meeting and successfully pitched a story that was reported by news anchor/reporter Walt Gray.  On March 20, I co-produced the sports segment.  I also write scripts for Rodgers and other anchors, research information for stories, travel with photographers for stories, record and edit video for live newscasts, and controlled the KCRA 3 Digital Center for an on-air slide show.

I completed a second internship with KCRA and still contribute with the station.  This September, I will transfer to Azusa Pacific University to continue my studies in journalism and will write for the student publication The Clause.
